2024 MARITIME CONFERENCES - 2024 Apr 17

The 5th SAFETY4SEA Limassol Forum, entitled "Cultivating maritime skills today, to bloom in the future" was a full day event that took place on 31 January 2024 at the Columbia Venue Centre of Columbia Plaza, Limassol, Cyprus, emphasising on developing management strategies and appropriate skillsets to prepare maritime professionals for the shifting landscape that lays ahead.

George A. Tsavliris, President of CYMEPA, delivered a keynote speech on the environmental challenges facing the maritime industry. He highlighted that shipping could not remain unaffected by the ongoing global discussions and increased awareness of the adverse effects of climate change. He also emphasized the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) efforts to reduce the industry's emissions in recent years, shaping the landscape and highlighted the ambitions set in the revised IMO GHG Strategy that have introduced new challenges for the industry in managing a lower-emissions pathway.

7th SLIDE2OPEN CONFERENCE in Athens

Earlier in January, George A.  Tsavliris participated in the 7th SLIDE2OPEN CONFERENCE in Athens which took place on 24 January 2024 at the Megaron, Athens Concert Hall. Mr Tsavliris was asked to share his inspiring thoughts at the end of the conference with his epilogue, 'A Shipowner's Closing Thoughts'.

Capital Link Cyprus Conference: On 27 February 2024, George Tsavliris was the Conference Chairman for the 7th consecutive year.

The Forum was held at the Columbia Plaza in Limassol under the Auspices of the Shipping Deputy Ministry of Cyprus and the Shipping Deputy Minister to the President, and in cooperation with the Cyprus Union of Shipowners, which was also the Lead Sponsor. The event was also supported by major organizations of the Cyprus Shipping Cluster, including the Cyprus Shipping Chamber.

With a comprehensive agenda featuring a great line up of speakers, the event truly served as a catalyst for top-level discussions on the most pressing issues facing both Cyprus and Global shipping today.

With substantial attendance, the Forum provided industry participants with the opportunity to engage in insightful dialogue and reinforce connections that can impact the direction of the industry.

On 17 April 2024, the Cyprus Shipping Chamber (CSC) and CYMEPA, celebrated the milestone of adopting 1,000 ships as part of its "Ship Adoption" educational programme, at the Columbia Plaza, in Limassol. The event was attended by the deputy Minister of Shipping, Marina Hatzimanoli, representatives of the Ministry of Education, 100 students and 14 teachers from five different primary schools of Limassol.

The programme is an initiative of the CSC in close collaboration with the Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association (CYMEPA), with official support from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works as well as the Ministry of Shipping, and has been taking place annually since 2006.

George Tsavliris, CYMEPA Chairman, in his speech, underlined the importance of the initative for future generations and how it enlightens the public about the advantages of shipping, increasing overall awareness of its positive and vital role in the economy and society.
The event was held as part of the Chamber's activities for the 35th anniversary of its establishment in 1989 and this programme is a unique educational experience that aims to bring primary school students close to the dynamically developing field of shipping and the professional activities surrounding it.
